If you’ve always wanted a dog, finding out you are allergic can be devastating. But there are options for dealing with your pet allergy.
The bad news is there is no “allergy-free” breed of dog. Even hairless breeds can cause allergies and sometimes those allergies are just too strong to ignore. Children can sometimes outgrow their allergies, but adults rarely do. So if you’re allergic, take a few steps to allergy-proof your home.
Try creating an allergy-free zone in your home, preferably in that person’s bedroom. Prohibit your dog’s access to that room and make sure you keep clothes, sheets, and even the air clean with a HEPA air cleaner.
Second, keep these cleaners present throughout the rest of your home. Keep plushy fabrics to a limit, including curtains, furniture, and carpet.
Bathing your pet weekly can also reduce the level of dander in your home. Be sure to use shampoo and products specially made for your dog and be sure it does not harm the dog or his coat.
Finally, and most importantly, see an allergist. Only they can tell you the true cause of your allergy and your sensitivity. Chances are there could be other allergens in your home that make your condition worse.
