Keeping Your Dog Groomed

Short hair, long hair, curly or straight, grooming your dog is an important process in maintaining your dog at optimal health and exuberance.

No matter which type of dog you have, all dogs are susceptible to matted hair, especially long-hair breeds. Regular brushing and combing helps prevent matting by removing dead hair and dirt. Because grooming stimulates the blood supply to the skin, it can also lead to healthier and shinier coats.

Grooming your dog can also be an excellent way to bond with your dog. Get your dog used to it early on so he doesn’t try to fight you on it later in life. When done correctly, brushing can feel a lot like petting or gentle massaging, so dogs often get accustomed to it as a sign of affection and attention.

The pet store should have a number of pet grooming supplies available, including different combs and brushes with differently-spaced teeth so you can find the right match for your dog’s hair type. You can also find supplies for other integral pet grooming needs, such as cutting your dog’s nails.
