Keeping your dog healthy is a must for any owner.

First, you must find a veterinarian you trust and can take your dog to regularly. Ideally, regular checkups for your dog should be done about twice a year. Puppies and older dogs should go in more frequently. Be sure your comfortable communicating with your vet about anything and keep his name and number handy in case of an emergency. Also be sure to have the directions to an emergency pet facility readily available.

Just like people, dogs need a good diet. Be sure to obtain a high-quality dog food or homemade food, and use it consistently. Notice any changes in your dog’s diet. Also pay attention to things like your dog’s coat, teeth, and weight. These are all things that can be managed through your dog’s food, so ask your vet which food is best for your dog.

Finally, make sure your dog exercises plenty. Obesity and heart damage can occur in dogs just like in humans. If you feed your dog a balanced diet, she should have plenty of energy. So give your dog an outlet for that energy through exercise. Generally, dogs need at least 1-2 hours of exercise a day. Over time, develop a routine that fits your dog’s lifestyle and breed.
