Petspace | Litter Box Training Basics

If litter box training seems like a chore, remember, it doesn’t have to be. Litter box training is relatively simple and pays off tremendously in the long run.

First, start your kitten off with the right litter box. A plastic box is usually the most practical and easy to clean. The sides should be high enough to allow a good amount of litter but low enough for your cat to easily get in and out of. Some kittens dislike scented litter, so start off with unscented clay or clumping litter. Cats will usually head for the litter automatically as opposed to other surfaces, with the exception of potted plants or soil. Keep these away from your kitten’s reach and be sure to place the litter box away from noisy objects, such as a washing machine or radiator. Just like us, animals appreciate the privacy.

Closely supervise your kitten during training. When he begins to sniff around, gently pick him up and place him in the litter box. Praise him when he goes in the box, and give him a small treat so he knows he did a good job.

Correct mistakes as soon as possible so they don’t turn into bad habits. Often, house soiling may be caused by a number of reasons, including an unclean litter box, a change in the kind of litter, fear in or near the litter box, or even medical conditions. Try correcting these problems and never punish your cat for not going in the litter box, as this may only worsen the problem.
