If your dog seems under the weather, you may need to be on the lookout for worms, fleas, and other parasites. There are a number of products available on the market to defend dogs from heart worms, fleas, ticks, hook worms, lice, and a number of other parasitic bugs that can harm your canine friend, so be sure to quickly treat whatever afflicts your pet.
Fleas can often produce a hyper sensitive reaction in dogs. From vigorous scratching to biting and licking, fleas can create infected areas of skin on your pet that may turn into dermatitis. This means your dog may sleep uncomfortably, or may whine when touched in the infected area, which can be painful and irritable.
Hook worms and similar parasites result in anemia, loose stools, and a pot belly. Take your pet to the vet if these symptoms result and ask what he recommends as treatment.
There are many commercial products on the market. Some of which are useful for dealing with all these conditions by a single dose. Drugs like ivermectin are highly effective and are available in injection, oral and solution forms. The latter should be applied directly to the skin. These drugs can serve as treatment and prevention as well.
Whatever happens, keep a watchful eye on your dog for any changes in his behavior, health, or physical appearance as these could be signs of serious infection.
