Leashes and collars allow us to take our pets on walks with us. There are a number of varieties to choose from and while the choice is mostly up to you as the owner, there are some pros and cons with each type.
Leashes
The Flat Nylon leash is the most common type of leash. They are available in different lengths and colors. Longer leashes can be used during normal walks, while short leashes are more commonly used when walking through crowds. Extra long leashes are normally used for training purposes.
Leather leashes vary from plain to very ornate. Though strong, they shouldn’t get wet, as water will make them brittle.
Braided Rope leashes are sometimes preferred by owners because of their colorful patterns and because they are easier on the hands.
Collars
Like leashes, collar choice is strictly up to you as the owner. Nylon collars stay clean, but fade easily and may easily tear. Leather collars are also very strong, but must be kept away from water. Leather also tends to pick up smells.
Fit is the most important thing to consider when choosing a collar. If you can fit two fingers between the collar and your dog, then it’s probably a good fit.
Flat Buckle collars come in a variety of materials, usually nylon, leather, and cloth covered nylon. The buckle fits into holes on the collar, providing a good fit for a growing dog.
Flat Quick Release collars are similar to the buckle collars, but have a quick release snap. These are usually made of nylon and are ideal for quick removal.
Braided Nylon collars are not particularly sturdy and are mostly used when showing a dog. They tighten the same way a training collar does and are not recommended for everyday wear.
