Unfortunately, dogs bite. While there are more aggressive breeds than others, most dogs have become so domesticated they rarely bite unless they’re afraid. Still, you should always be conscious of the fact that dogs can bite at any time and you should take steps to ensure your dog doesn’t bite anyone.
To prevent your own dog from biting, the best bet is to spay or neuter her/him. Socialize your puppy to many different people, animals, and places so that they can get used to being in new environments and so they don’t react with fear. If this doesn’t work, consider enrolling your dog in obedience training classes. Ask your veterinarian for a reference if necessary. Finally, if your dog is already displaying signs of biting, don’t leave him alone for long periods of time.
If an aggressive dog approaches you or a loved one, there are also steps you can take to keep that dog from attacking. Firstly, look away from the dog’s eyes. Stand like a tree with both arms down by your sides. If you can, give the dog anything not attached to you, like a jacket or shirt. This will entertain them, giving you the opportunity to escape. If the dog knocks you down, remain quiet, curl up in a ball and cover your ears. Most dogs will leave.
Never underestimate a dog. Whether he’s your beloved, trained pet or a stray off the street, dogs act on their animalistic instincts meaning they could potentially bit or attack. Be on guard and be ready, no matter which dog you’re near.
