Rectangular aquariums have become the norm, but there are more ways to impress your friends and loved ones that go beyond the usual aquarium, unique lighting, or fancy fish.

Unique fish tanks come in a variety of sizes and shapes, but they all have one thing in common – they are designed to impress people. Whether it’s a small tank or a large wall aquarium, these aquariums can be fun to shop for and even more fun to maintain.

The wall aquarium started because some people in smaller houses or condominiums wanted to be able to keep fun fish tanks without wasting precious floor space. A wall tank is actually housed within an interior wall of the building. The lighting, filter, air pump, and all accessories are kept out of view. This leaves a pristine image to feast your eyes upon without having to see all the contraptions that are necessary to keep the inhabitants healthy.

Other tanks are designed to be hung on the wall, like you’d hang a picture frame. These are often suited best for small fish like guppies and fancy goldfish due to their narrow size.

Another type of aquarium that will impress friends is the coffee table tank. This comes with a regular glass table top, but underneath this see-through surface, and making up the base of the table is a fish tank! They are often long and narrow, but not very high. Unlike the wall tanks, many large species are great in this type of setup. They are surprisingly easy to clean tanks to removable tops.

Finally, there are modular designs that not only look great, but provide a wonderful environment for fish. These are available with various pieces that are connected by tubing filled with water. The fish are free to swim from globe to globe as they discover their favorite parts of the environment. Not only is it entertaining to watch, it provides your fish with excellent exercise.

The arrival of a new puppy in a household can be a time of great excitement and joy. You want to make sure your puppy is happy and healthy, but it is also important that you begin shaping his character from an early age. Here we have a few simple training techniques that are crucial in obedience training and can help make the bond between you and your new pup strong and healthy.

When you ask something of your puppy, praise him when he does it. Praise and reward is the most effective way to train your puppy and get him behaving the way you want him to. If he doesn’t follow your command, give an appropriate correction. Be stern, but do not use violence or let your temper get the best of you. This will misadjust your dog and lead to other behavioral problems.

Repetition is key. Repeating your commands often will help your dog learn what it needs to do. Stick with short phrases that are easy for your puppy to memorize, and make sure you are clear in your commands.

Be fair and understanding. Do not expect your dog to do something he has not been taught to do. Do not punish your dog for something he has not done, and if a correction is in order, correct him when you catch him in the act. Dogs do not have the capacity to remember things, or feel remorse in the same way that humans do, so timing is critical. Understanding this is crucial in dog training and can save you time and effort.

Finding what motivates your dog towards proper behavior is important. It will play a major part in your dog’s training. Training schools are effective, but you must be able to communicate with your dog effective on your own. Be patient and loving, and the training will come naturally.

Aggression is the second most common feline behavior problem seen by animal behaviorists. Although cats are not often seen as threatening, the can become quite formidable when upset. Aggression comes in various forms, and here we classify a few of the forms so that you can better understand why your cat may begin to act aggressively towards you and/or others.

The most common aggressive cat behavior is that of unneutered male cats towards other male cats. As cats begin to reach adulthood, they become more territorial, challenging each other for access to territory and mates. Though more obvious between stray cats, household cats can often act aggressively towards each other as well. Aggressors often make themselves bigger, while the recipient cats make themselves appear smaller and quickly break away.

Fearful aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat. His fear escalates if he cannot escape, his reaction to the threat increasing as well. Defensive signals, such as crouching, flattening the ears, tucking the tail, or leaning to the side, often combine with aggressive signals, such as hissing and spitting, growling, biting, pawing, and scratching as a form of protection.

The most common aggression cats can display to their owners is playful aggression. It is usually typical predator and prey play behavior that includes crouching, stalking, chasing, leaping and batting. It is believed that when young cats play with each other, they learn to inhibit their bites and swats to prevent harm, but play aggression can become harmful if not handled properly.

Aggression can be a dangerous problem to take care of. It can sometimes be a symptom of a clinical condition, so it is important to seek the advice of a veterinarian or other professional when dealing with your cat’s aggression.

Does your new kitten keep you up at night? Does your cat constantly meow for no reason? Well, just as humans and other animals make noise in order to communicate your cat may be trying to send you a message.

Greetings! – Cats often meow as a greeting when you get home, when they meet you somewhere in the house, or as a response to something.

Attention seeking – Your cat may be dying for some social interaction. If they want to be petted, stroked, played with, or paid attention to, cats can begin meowing. After spending long periods of time alone, they may be especially likely to meow for your attention.

Feed me! – Cats can be demanding when hungry. Some cats may learn to meow when their owner’s enter the kitchen as a means of asking for food. Others meow at breakfast and dinner time, or when people are gathered around the table to beg for food.

In or Out – Cats who want to be let in or out of a house may meow or scratch at the door. Cats are especially prone to meow when being trained to stay either inside or outside. If they are not used to one or the other, they will meow incessantly at a door or window to be let back in (or out). This can be a difficult transition time, and the meowing may last for weeks or months at a time.

Mating – Many cats meow when searching for a mate or when in heat.

Confusion – Elderly cats suffering from dementia may meow if disoriented or confused. This may be a symptom of feline Alzheimer’s disease, and a trip to your feline’s physician may be necessary.

Meows are just another form of communication. All animals must communicate, and most meowing is normal feline behavior. If their meowing becomes incessant, always consult your veterinarian.

Whether your dog is a show dog or your in-house companion, dogs require proper grooming practices to promote their happiness and well-being. Make sure you do your part to keep Rover looking and feeling his best by keeping up a few necessary grooming procedures.

Brushing your dog daily is necessary for all lengths of hair. It controls your dog’s shedding and stimulates blood flow, as well as helping to remove fleas and ticks and keeping your dog’s coat healthy and shiny.

Bathing your dog not only turns him into a more pleasant companion for you, but promotes skin health and keeps away irritations.

Trimming your dog’s nails prevents them from growing too long and curling into their pads, which can result in pain and infection. The nails can begin to split, or can cause your dog’s toes to separate, resulting in lameness, poor posture, and joint pain.

Tooth brushing has a number of positive effects, aside from curbing that dreaded doggie breath. Brushing his teeth increases blood flow to the gums and prevents plaque, tartar, and gum disease.

Ear-cleaning is especially important for dogs with particularly floppy ears. Removing ear wax can help prevent ear infections and the buildup of wax and bacteria.

Clipping is important for dogs that have longer hair that mats easily. Clipping keeps fleas and ticks away and makes grooming simpler.

These simple steps in your pet’s grooming can prevent complications with your pet’s health, and keeps your pet looking clean and fresh.

Studies in the UK have shown what most dog owners already know: owning a dog can be good for your health.

The study showed that owning a dog improved mental as well as physical well-being. Dog ownership was shown to prevent many people from getting ill and improved recovery time when they did fall ill. Owning a dog was also linked to early detection of certain illnesses, such as cancer, seizures, and hypoglycemia.

New Puppy Arrives

Any dog owner will tell you of the happiness their dog has brought into their lives, but owning a dog often does more than people may think. Dogs are often used in rehabilitation centers because of their therapeutic value; they have the ability to raise spirits and induce happiness. They also provide companionship that helps get the sick through painful treatments.

Though owning a dog is clearly linked to an increase in physical activity, which has an obvious positive effect on your health, the UK studies now link dog ownership to a decrease in minor health problems, such as the occurrence of headaches, dizzy spells, and colds and can also help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

With all the positive effects that dogs have on their owners’ lives, owning a dog becomes a matter of increasing our own happiness and well-being.
